INNOCENT Kaia rose to the demands of a must-win contest with a commanding 72 as Zimbabwe beat Namibia by five wickets with 11 balls remaining on Thursday to keep their T20I Tri-Series final ambitions alive.
With Zimbabwe’s tournament hanging precariously in the balance, Kaia produced his second T20I half-century and arguably his most important innings in the format, striking 72 from only 42 deliveries as the Chevrons successfully chased Namibia’s 156 for six.
Zimbabwe reached 159 for five in 18.1 overs at Namibia Cricket Ground, moving to four points and ensuring their hopes of reaching Saturday’s final remain alive.
They must now wait for the outcome of Friday’s final round-robin encounter between Namibia and South Africa, with net run rate potentially coming into play should the Eagles win.
For Kaia, however, on Thursday it was about taking responsibility when Zimbabwe desperately required someone at the top of the order to do so.
The chase had barely settled when Ben Curran was removed for five by JJ Smit, leaving Zimbabwe nine for one in the second over.
A wicket at that stage could easily have opened the door to another top-order collapse, something which had damaged Zimbabwe against South Africa earlier in the week.
Kaia slammed it shut.
Together with Brian Bennett, he restored order through a 61-run second-wicket partnership, but there was nothing passive about the recovery.
Kaia attacked whenever Namibia offered an opportunity and ensured the required rate never became a burden.
His half-century arrived from only 30 deliveries in emphatic fashion, launching Jack Brassell over deep midwicket for six in the ninth over. It was his third maximum of the innings.
By then, Kaia had taken command of the chase.
He followed with consecutive boundaries off Ruben Trumpelmann in the 11th over as Zimbabwe surged past 100 in 10.4 overs.
The right-hander eventually departed for 72, caught by Namibia captain Gerhard Erasmus off Brassell at 124 in the 14th over. His 42-ball innings contained eight fours and three sixes and had left Zimbabwe within striking distance of victory.
Captain Sikandar Raza contributed 29 from 24 balls before falling to Trumpelmann, but there was no late twist this time.
Ryan Burl and Tadiwanashe Marumani completed the assignment, with Marumani making 13 and Burl 12.
Fittingly, Burl applied the finishing touch in emphatic fashion, flat-batting Smit over wide long-off for six as Zimbabwe crossed the line at 159 for five in 18.1 overs.
The victory had been built earlier by a Zimbabwe attack that refused to allow Namibia to fully exploit a fine innings from Erasmus.
The home captain carried his bat for an unbeaten 88 from 48 deliveries, striking eight fours and three sixes, but Zimbabwe continued taking wickets around him.
Brad Evans claimed two for 29, while Kundai Matigimu continued an encouraging start to international cricket with two for 31 after making his debut against South Africa earlier in the week.
Blessing Muzarabani returned one for 34 and Raza took one for 27 as Namibia were restricted to 156 for six.
A particularly important passage came when the hosts slipped from 108 for three to 128 for six, denying Erasmus the support required for the explosive finish Namibia would have wanted.
Zimbabwe then made the target look considerably smaller through Kaia’s authority at the crease.
