CARLTON Takawira delivered an outstanding all-round performance to inspire Takashinga 2 to a thrilling three-wicket victory over Uhuru Cricket Club in the HMCA First League at Takashinga Cricket Club on Saturday.
Takawira first produced a decisive spell of four wickets before returning to blast 74 with the bat as Takashinga successfully chased down 244 in just 39.5 overs.
Uhuru recovered from a difficult start after Simbarashe Mudzengerere removed both Takudzwa Nyamugure (21) and Anesu Kamuriwo (1) inside the opening five overs.
Marshall Takodza responded with a captain’s innings, compiling a patient 69 from 100 deliveries while guiding the innings through the middle overs. Brendon Senzere contributed 22 and Alvin Chiradza made 19 as Uhuru gradually rebuilt after slipping to 34 for three.
Takawira then dismantled the middle and lower order, dismissing Alvin Chiradza, Brendon Senzere, Marshall Takodza and Ryan Simbi to finish with excellent figures of four for 44 from his full allocation.
Shelton Mazvitorera launched a late assault with a blistering 57 off only 33 balls, smashing six sixes and two boundaries to propel Uhuru to 243 for nine, while Wishnenzy Chapfombo remained unbeaten on 23.
Takashinga’s reply began slowly when Ryan Kamwemba was bowled by Anesu Kamuriwo for six.
Leeroy Chiwaula absorbed the early pressure before accelerating confidently, producing a well-crafted 66 from 74 balls. His innings, featuring five fours and two sixes, laid the platform for the chase before Shelton Mazvitorera trapped him leg before wicket.
Takawira then took centre stage and struck four fours and five sixes in a commanding 74 from 71 deliveries, dominating the bowlers and ensuring the asking rate never became a concern.
Although Trymore Mangwiro removed Takawira, Panashe Gwatiringa (22) and the unbeaten Tatenda Chimugoro with 22 off 14 balls guided Takashinga towards victory.
Takashinga 2 eventually reached 244 for seven with more than 10 overs remaining to complete a deserved victory.
Shelton Mazvitorera and Trymore Mangwiro both claimed three wickets for Uhuru, but Takawira’s outstanding all-round display proved the difference between the two sides.
