TAKASHINGA Patriots 1 came agonisingly close to ending Gladiators Cricket Club’s unbeaten run in the NPL T20 Blast, only for the defending champions to snatch a two-wicket victory with two balls remaining at Harare Sports Club on Tuesday.
Half-centuries from Kudzai Maunze and Uganda international Gerald Olipa powered Takashinga to 196/5, before Shelton Mazvitorera and Tapiwa Mufudza claimed three wickets apiece to leave Gladiators fighting for survival.
But an unbeaten 45 from Gladiators captain Milton Shumba proved decisive as the champions scraped home at 197/8 in 19.4 overs.
For Takashinga, the defeat was particularly painful after they had twice put themselves in positions to take control of the match.
Maunze set the tone with an explosive 60 from just 30 balls, striking four fours and five sixes as Takashinga made an aggressive start after winning the toss and electing to bat.
He reached his half-century from only 22 deliveries and dominated a 60-run opening partnership with Ronak Patel, who contributed 10.
Gladiators eventually found a breakthrough through Laksh Bakraina, who dismissed Patel before removing Maunze with the score on 82 in the ninth over.
Takashinga reached 99/2 after 10 overs, leaving the responsibility of building a substantial total to Olipa and captain Roy Kaia.
The pair added 51 for the third wicket, with Kaia contributing 29 from 23 deliveries before being bowled by Munashe Zata.
Olipa continued to attack, reaching his half-century from 35 balls before eventually falling for 63 from 40 deliveries.
His innings included six fours and two sixes and ensured Takashinga maintained a healthy scoring rate through the middle and closing overs.
Timycen Maruma chipped in with 14 from eight balls, while Hamilton Masakadza and Samuel Muyambo finished unbeaten on six and four respectively.
Takashinga closed on 196/5, setting Gladiators a target that required almost 10 runs an over.
Their bowlers, however, were immediately placed under pressure by Lennox Chando.
The Gladiators wicketkeeper-batter smashed 45 from just 18 balls, striking seven fours and two sixes as the champions raced to 60 in the fifth over.
Mazvitorera eventually removed Chando, having already dismissed Naison Mare for six, to give Takashinga a foothold in the contest.
Gladiators nevertheless reached 79/2 after six overs, with Panashe Taruvinga and Brendon Sunguro continuing the attacking approach.
Mufudza dismissed Taruvinga for 16, while Kaia bowled Sunguro for 34 to leave Gladiators on 107/4 after nine overs.
Takashinga had begun to claw their way back, but Shumba and Tony Munyonga frustrated their efforts with a 52-run fifth-wicket partnership.
Munyonga struck 24 from 15 balls before Mufudza removed him in the 15th over.
The spinner then dismissed Owen Muzondo for six, keeping Takashinga in contention as the match entered its final stages.
Mazvitorera returned to remove Victor Nyauchi for two, while Arineshto Vhezha was run out for eight as Gladiators slipped to 191/8 in the 19th over.
With six runs still needed and only two wickets standing, Takashinga had an opportunity to claim a memorable victory.
Shumba, however, remained composed, guiding Gladiators over the line alongside Munashe Zata.
The captain finished unbeaten on 45 from 33 balls, while Zata contributed five not out.
Mazvitorera returned impressive figures of 3/30 from three overs, while Mufudza claimed 3/34 from four.
Their six wickets had brought Takashinga within touching distance of victory, but the champions’ lower order survived long enough to complete the chase.
The defeat followed Takashinga’s earlier 67-run loss to Sogo Rangers, despite half-centuries from Kaia and a determined contribution from Samuel Muyambo.
Against Gladiators, Takashinga produced a much stronger batting display and backed it up with a spirited bowling effort.
Maunze and Olipa supplied the runs, while Mazvitorera and Mufudza repeatedly interrupted Gladiators’ chase.
Yet the final breakthrough never came.
The narrow margin will be difficult to accept for Takashinga after taking eight wickets against an unbeaten defending champion.
