TAKASHINGA 2 produced a brave batting effort built around Baxon Gopito and Daichi Nyandoro, but fell just short as Old Hararians 1 edged to a two wicket victory in a closely fought Vigne Cup league match at Old Hararians Sports Club on Sunday. After choosing to bat, Takashinga 2 were in early trouble at 60 for 5 inside 16 overs, struggling to build momentum against a disciplined bowling attack. Gopito, leading from the front, then staged a fine recovery. The captain played a composed and confident innings, reaching his half century off 43 balls and going on to score a superb 78 from 58 deliveries, striking the ball cleanly to keep his side in the contest. He found strong support in Nyandoro, who matched him stroke for stroke in a crucial seventh wicket stand that turned the innings around. Nyandoro brought up his fifty off 52 balls and finished with an impressive 62 from 68 deliveries, including several well timed boundaries and big hits. Together, the pair added over 100 runs for the seventh wicket, lifting Takashinga 2 from a difficult position to a competitive total. Their partnership shifted the pressure back onto Old Hararians and gave the innings much needed momentum. Takashinga 2 were eventually bowled out for 226 in 41.4 overs, a total that looked unlikely earlier in the innings. Chasing the total, Old Hararians 1 made a shaky start, losing early wickets as Takashinga’s bowlers struck in the powerplay. Arineshto Vhezha and Simbarashe Mudzengerere made early inroads, while Nyandoro impressed again with the ball, returning excellent figures of 2 for 24 from his 10 overs. Takashinga kept chipping away with regular breakthroughs, and Gopito also contributed with a key wicket, but Old Hararians were kept in the chase by a fluent 58 from Cephas Zhuwao and a steady unbeaten 61 from Faraz Akram. Despite the pressure applied by Takashinga’s bowlers, Old Hararians reached 227 for 8 in 45.5 overs to seal victory.
