TAKASHINGA Patriots 1 summoned a spirited batting display led by captain Roy Kaia’s brilliant 108, but fell 52 runs short of Rangers’ 337 in the HMCA Vigne Cup 1st League on Saturday.
Takashinga won the toss and chose to field first at Old Georgians Sports Club. The Takashinga bowlers worked hard on a good batting surface. Trevor Mutsamba and Priviledge Chesa both claimed three wickets each, finishing with 3/63 and 3/59 respectively, to help restrict Rangers to 337/7 in 50 overs. Chesa made the key breakthrough, removing opener Jayden Schadendorf for 85. Rangers’ Alistair Frost later struck an unbeaten 102 off 58 balls, with Jarod Basson adding 64.
Chasing 338, Takashinga had a tough start at 15/2 after losing both openers early. Opener Tinashe Kamunhukamwe and skipper Roy Kaia then rebuilt with a strong 128-run stand for the third wicket. Kamunhukamwe contributed a solid 40 before Kaia took control of the innings.
The captain led from the front with a commanding 108 off 90 balls, hitting 15 fours and five sixes to keep Takashinga in the contest. All-rounder Priviledge Chesa then lifted the tempo with a rapid 62 from just 28 balls, including two fours and eight sixes, raising hopes of a remarkable chase.
Despite the fightback, Takashinga were bowled out for 285 in 45.3 overs. Rangers captain Brad Evans returned 4/29 and Jarod Basson picked up 3/23 to close out the game.
While the result did not go Takashinga’s way, the match showcased strong individual performances from Kaia, Chesa, and Mutsamba as the Patriots continue their Vigne Cup campaign.
