TAKASHINGA 2 made a strong start to their Vigne Cup campaign with a convincing five-wicket win over Uhuru Cricket Club in a run-filled encounter at Takashinga Cricket Club on Sunday.
Chasing 229 for victory, Takashinga 2 reached 231 for 5 in 37.4 overs, built around an outstanding fourth-wicket partnership between captain Kudzai Maunze and wicketkeeper Ryan Kamwemba.
Earlier, Uhuru posted 228 all out in 48.2 overs after electing to bat. Their innings was anchored by Marshall Takodza, who struck a well-paced 70 off 92 balls, while Innocent Kaia added 49 from 76 deliveries. Late hitting from Shelton Mazvitorera, who scored 36 off 24 balls, lifted the total to a competitive score.
Takashinga’s bowlers shared the wickets, with Tatenda Chimugoro leading the early charge. He claimed key top-order wickets to leave Uhuru under pressure in the opening overs. Daichi Nyandoro and Tinotenda Zimunhu also made important breakthroughs through the middle and lower order to ensure Uhuru did not run away with the game.
In reply, Takashinga 2 lost early wickets and slipped to 41 for 3 inside 11 overs. Baxon Gopito and Tanunurwa Makoni both departed cheaply, and Simbarashe Mudzengerere followed soon after, leaving the hosts in trouble.
Maunze then took control. The captain played with authority, mixing solid defence with aggressive strokeplay. He reached his half-century off 51 balls and went on to score 81 from 82 deliveries, striking four fours and five sixes.
Kamwemba provided the perfect foil. He paced his innings expertly, bringing up his fifty off 63 balls and finishing with a valuable 69 from 82 deliveries.
The pair added a match-winning stand of over 180 for the fourth wicket, turning the game firmly in Takashinga’s favour after a shaky start.
Although both batters fell late in the innings, the damage had already been done. Tinashe Nenhunzi and Tatenda Chimugoro calmly guided the team home with more than 12 overs to spare.
Maunze was named Player of the Match for his decisive knock and leadership.
The result gives Takashinga 2 early momentum in the competition.
