TAKASHINGA Cricket Club opener Innocent Kaia fulfilled a lifelong dream on Monday, scoring his maiden Test century to put Zimbabwe firmly in command on the second day of the one-off Test against Bangladesh at Harare Sports Club.
Resuming on his overnight score of 76 not out, Kaia batted with patience and authority to reach three figures in the 47th over. He brought up the milestone by pulling Ebadot Hossain to deep midwicket for four before removing his helmet and raising his bat to acknowledge the applause from the Harare crowd.
The landmark innings continued well beyond the century as the right-hander frustrated Bangladesh’s bowlers with assured strokeplay and disciplined shot selection. In a remarkable feat, Kaia went on to score exactly 140 runs, matching Bangladesh’s entire first-innings total on his own.
Kaia eventually fell for a magnificent 140 from 227 deliveries, an innings decorated with 17 boundaries. His vigil finally ended when he offered a simple catch to Shadman Islam off left-arm spinner Taijul Islam at silly mid-off. Attempting to work a flighted delivery off his pads, Kaia closed the face of the bat too early and edged a tame chance, leaving Zimbabwe on 279 for four.
The century was the first of Kaia’s Test career and capped a memorable performance from the Takashinga opener, whose individual contribution equalled the visitors’ entire first-innings score and laid the platform for Zimbabwe to seize control of the match.
Kaia had resumed alongside Brendan Taylor after the pair guided Zimbabwe to 136 for one at stumps on Sunday, trailing Bangladesh by only four runs. Although Taylor departed early on the second morning, Kaia remained composed, building crucial partnerships that steadily pushed Zimbabwe into a commanding first-innings lead.
His innings followed Zimbabwe’s outstanding bowling display on the opening day when Bangladesh were dismissed for 140 in 47.2 overs. Newman Nyamhuri starred with figures of 4 for 61, while Richard Ngarava and Blessing Muzarabani claimed two wickets apiece to leave the visitors on the back foot.
With Kaia’s career-best knock providing the cornerstone of the innings and Zimbabwe establishing a substantial first-innings advantage, the hosts are firmly in control as they push for victory in the one-off Test.
