TANUNURWA Makoni unbeaten 83 steered Takashinga 2 to a seven-wicket victory over Amakhosi Cricket Club in a National Premier League match at Kwekwe Sports Club on Wednesday.
Tanu anchored the chase with a composed display of stroke-making, combining patience with calculated aggression as Takashinga 2 successfully hunted down a target of 170 with 53 balls remaining.
After winning the toss and opting to field, Takashinga 2’s bowlers made an immediate impact, reducing Amakhosi to 25 for five inside the first 10 overs.
Shelton Mazvitorera and Usher Garwe caused early damage with disciplined spells. Mazvitorera removed Bright Phiri for 5 and Tanaka Mtomba for 1, while Garwe dismissed Brandon Ndiweni, Tafara Mupariwa and Ashley Phiri to leave the hosts in serious trouble.
Amakhosi’s innings appeared in danger of collapsing completely at 37 for six, but Nkosibongwe Gogodo and Raymond Kasimo launched a determined recovery.
The pair added 100 runs for the seventh wicket, transforming a difficult position into a competitive total. Gogodo showed excellent temperament, scoring 74 from 86 balls with eight fours and a six, while Kasimo remained unbeaten on 68 from 72 deliveries, striking four fours and two sixes.
Their partnership lifted Amakhosi to 169 before they were eventually dismissed in 38 overs.
Takashinga 2’s bowling attack shared the workload, with Garwe finishing as the standout performer with three for 19 from eight overs. Mazvitorera claimed two wickets for 30 runs from seven overs, while Tanatswa Chisvo also collected two wickets for 20 runs in six overs.
In reply, Takashinga 2 lost Liam Mudenda early for 10, but Makoni took control of the chase and ensured there was no dramatic collapse.
The right-hander brought up his half-century from 62 balls, having already struck five fours and two sixes, before continuing to punish the Amakhosi attack.
He received valuable support from captain Baxon Gopito, who contributed 34 from 43 balls, including three fours and a six, during a 51-run second-wicket partnership that settled the innings after the early setback.
Charles Kunje then added a brisk 28 from 33 deliveries, featuring two fours and two sixes, before falling with the score on 158. By then, the result was effectively beyond doubt.
Tanu remained unbeaten on 83 from 91 balls, with eight fours and three sixes, guiding Takashinga 2 home on 171 for three in 31.1 overs. Wicketkeeper Tinashe Nenhunzi finished unbeaten on 4.
For Amakhosi, Shaun Dzakatira was the pick of the bowlers with 1 for 33 from eight overs, while Jeffrey Mhuriyengwe, Nkosibongwe Gogodo and others claimed a wicket each.
