DECORATED former Zimbabwe Cricket captain Elton Chigumbura has been appointed Uhuru Cricket Club Head Coach as Takashinga Cricket Club confirmed a number of coaching and managerial appointments.
For many within the Highfield-based club, it feels less like a new appointment and more like a continuation of a journey already producing results.
Before moving to Uhuru, Chigumbura served as head coach of Takashinga 2, where he guided the side to National Premier League success and helped shape one of the most competitive development structures in local cricket. Under his leadership, Takashinga 2 became one of the most organised and competitive outfits in the domestic game, producing several players who have continued to rise through the ranks.
Chigumbura’s coaching credentials are backed by an outstanding international career. He represented the Chevrons for nearly two decades, becoming one of the country’s finest all-rounders across formats. He played more than 200 One-Day Internationals, captained Zimbabwe in all three formats and built a reputation for powerful lower-order batting capable of changing matches within a handful of overs.
His ability to clear the ropes with ease made him one of the most destructive hitters Zimbabwe has produced, while his medium pace often delivered crucial breakthroughs.
Yet perhaps his greatest contribution now lies in what he offers away from the spotlight.
Takashinga’s latest appointments underline the club’s continued emphasis on development pathways, an approach that has long made it one of Zimbabwe cricket’s most influential institutions.
Erick Chauluka has been appointed overall head coach and will also work with Takashinga 1 alongside assistant coach Stuart Matsikenyere and team manager Keith Kulinga.
Takashinga 2 will be led by head coach Nobert Manyande, assisted by Ngonidzashe Mutasa, with T Muchochoma serving as team manager.
At Uhuru, Chigumbura is joined by assistant coach Nigel Mupurura and team manager Chamu Chibhabha, the former Zimbabwe international. The Takashinga club executive expressed its gratitude to Chigumbura’s for his service to the club and wished him well on his new endeavour.
The club’s youth structure remains extensive. In the boys’ Under-17 system, Takashinga 1 will be coached by Tapiwa Mufudza and Chibhabha, while Chigumbura takes charge of Takashinga 2 alongside Brian Majoka.
At Under-15 level, Takashinga 1 will be led by Bernard Mlambo and K Jena, with Keith Kulinga and Baxon Gopito overseeing Takashinga 2.
Under-13 Takashinga 1 will be handled by Isiah Makiyi and T Jani, while Under-13 Takashinga 2 is entrusted to Mupurura and Mutasa.
In the girls’ structures, Nonhlanhla Nyathi and A Marongwe will oversee Under-17 Takashinga 1, with Precious Marange and T Mukweva appointed to Under-17 Takashinga 2.
The Under-15 girls’ teams will be guided by Susan Kudzibatira and B Mangachena for Takashinga 1, while Trevor Garwe and H Muchawurawa take charge of Takashinga 2.
For a club long recognised as one of Zimbabwe cricket’s strongest production lines, the appointments signal continuity as much as ambition.
