TINASHE Nenhunzi made a determined unbeaten 41, but Takashinga 2’s batting collapse in the opening exchanges proved decisive as Eastern Titans registered a 74-run victory in their National Premier League 40 encounter at Takashinga Cricket Club on Sunday. Chasing 195 for victory after Eastern Titans had posted 194 for eight in their allotted 40 overs, Takashinga 2 were dismissed for 120 in 26.4 overs. While the margin of defeat was substantial, Takashinga 2 showed considerable fight through their batter and wicketkeeper Nenhunzi, whose unbeaten 41 from 53 balls provided the innings with much needed stability after the hosts had slipped to 40 for five. Nenhunzi’s knock, which lasted 83 minutes, was the cornerstone of the lower order fightback as he tried to keep the chase alive despite wickets falling around him. Nenhunzi tried to rebuild the innings after his side lost five wickets inside nine overs. By the time they reached 40, the chase appeared to be in serious danger, but he refused to surrender. He found useful support from Tanatswa Chisvo, who made 15 from 30 balls, with the pair adding 51 runs for the seventh wicket from 56 balls. Their partnership lifted Takashinga 2 to 102 for seven in 21.3 overs and briefly gave the hosts hope of mounting an unlikely recovery. However, once Chisvo was trapped Leg Before Wicket by Donald Tiripano for 15, the resistance faded. Ryan Simbi was dismissed for five by Prosper Mugeri, while Shelton Mazvitorera fell for seven to Anesu Kamuriwo. Nenhunzi remained unbeaten until the end, but ran out of partners as Takashinga 2 were bowled out for 120. Kamuriwo was the outstanding bowler for Eastern Titans, claiming six wickets for 32 runs in 6.4 overs. Mashford Shungu took one for 16, Prosper Mugeri one for 38, Tendai Chatara one for 10 and Donald Tiripano one for 18. The result, however, does not completely reflect the competitive moments Takashinga 2 produced, particularly with the ball. After being asked to field first, Patriots 2 kept Eastern Titans under pressure during the early stages. The visitors were only 26 for one after the opening 10 overs and reached 51 in 14.3 overs. Daichi Nyandoro was economical, conceding 40 runs from eight overs, while Simbi was particularly impressive with one for 22 from eight overs. Takudzwa Chataira also produced an excellent spell, taking three wickets for 28 runs in four overs. His ability to strike at crucial stages prevented Eastern Titans from building a larger total. Marshall Takodza also made an important contribution with the ball, claiming three wickets for 37 runs from eight overs, while Tanatswa Chisvo finished with three for 27 from six overs. Eastern Titans eventually relied on a patient middle order effort to reach 194 for eight. Takudzwa Nyamugure made 51 from 67 balls, hitting five fours and two sixes, while wicketkeeper Nigel Bonyongwe top scored with 68 from 82 balls, including seven fours. The pair helped rebuild the innings after Eastern Titans had lost Tariro Makauyo for nine, Clifford Takaedza for five and Nyamugure later for 51. Donald Tiripano added 23 from 37 balls, while Prosper Mugeri made 11 before falling to Chisvo. For Takashinga 2, the bowling effort ensured the target remained within striking distance rather than becoming an insurmountable total. The decisive difference came in the first 10 overs of the chase. Takashinga 2 lost five wickets for only 41 runs in the powerplay, leaving Nenhunzi with the difficult task of rebuilding an innings already under severe pressure. Despite the defeat, Nenhunzi’s unbeaten 41 and the 51-run partnership with Chisvo offered encouraging signs of character, while the disciplined spells from Chataira, Chisvo, Simbi and Nyandoro demonstrated that Takashinga 2 had the bowling resources to challenge Eastern Titans batting line-up.
