RICHARD Ngarava, one of Zimbabwe’s leading pace bowlers, took centre stage at this year’s Independence Day celebrations after he presented the Independence Flame to President Emmerson Mnangagwa in Maphisa. The left-arm pacer, who recently played a key role in Zimbabwe’s run to the Super Eight stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, was given the honour in recognition of his contribution to the national team and his growing influence in the game. The Independence Flame is a key symbol of Zimbabwe’s liberation and unity. It is traditionally handed to the President during the main celebrations to mark the country’s freedom and the sacrifices made during the liberation struggle. Ngarava’s involvement reflects the increasing role of sport in national events, with cricket continuing to produce figures who inspire both on and off the field. His recent performances on the international stage have made him one of the standout players in the Chevrons squad. From representing Zimbabwe at global tournaments to engaging with grassroots communities back home, Ngarava has become a symbol of hard work and national pride. His presence at the Maphisa celebrations added a sporting touch to the occasion, linking Zimbabwe’s past struggles with present-day achievements.
