TAKASHINGA 2 held their nerve in an exciting Vigne Cup derby to defeat Takashinga 1 by two wickets in a tightly contested match at Takashinga Cricket Club on Sunday.
In a match dominated by disciplined bowling and pressure moments, Takashinga 2 chased down 180 with 45 balls to spare after restricting Takashinga 1 to 179 all out in 49.1 overs.
The derby produced several standout performances, with Timycen Maruma leading the batting for Takashinga 1 before a determined all round effort from Takashinga 2 sealed victory.
After winning the toss and choosing to bat, Takashinga 1 made a cautious start, reaching 35 for one in the powerplay. Maruma anchored the innings superbly with a composed 63 from 90 balls, striking five fours and three sixes in a patient knock that kept the scoreboard moving.
Together with Samuel Muyambo, who contributed 26 from 54 balls, Maruma added stability after the early loss of Bryn Majoka. The pair shared a 50-run partnership that helped Takashinga 1 recover and settle into the innings.
Roy Kaia then chipped in with 34 from 55 balls as Takashinga 1 looked set for a stronger total at 136 for four after 35 overs.
However, Takashinga 2 fought back brilliantly in the closing stages. Their bowlers applied pressure consistently and triggered a collapse during final overs, where Takashinga 1 lost six wickets for just 28 runs.
Captain Baxon Gopito played a key role with the ball, taking three for 21 in six overs, while Simbarashe Mudzengerere claimed two for 37. Daichi Nyandoro also shone bright with an economical spell of one for 18 from 10 overs.
Panashe Gwatiringa wrapped up the innings with two late wickets as Takashinga 1 were bowled out for 179.
Chasing 180, Takashinga 2 got off to a difficult start after Mike Takodza was dismissed for a duck by Munashe Chipara in the opening over.
Tanunurwa Makoni briefly steadied the innings with a lively 20 from 19 balls before Kundai Matigimu struck twice to remove both Makoni and Ryan Kamwemba.
Takashinga 2 slipped further into trouble at 53 for five after Tapiwa Mufudza dismissed Simbarashe Mudzengerere and Gopito in quick succession.
With the innings under pressure, Tinashe Nenhunzi and Panashe Gwatiringa rebuilt carefully. Nenhunzi made an important 38 from 54 balls, while Gwatiringa produced the innings of the chase with a patient 43 from 67 deliveries.
Their partnership revived the innings and shifted momentum back towards Takashinga 2.
After Nenhunzi fell LBW to Mufudza, Gwatiringa continued to guide the chase before being dismissed by Kaia with the target in sight.
Nyandoro added a valuable 18, while Carlton Takawira remained unbeaten on 17 to steer Takashinga 2 home.
Tatenda Chimugoro sealed the victory in dramatic fashion with a quick unbeaten 11 from seven balls as Takashinga 2 reached 181 for 8 in 42.3 overs.
For Takashinga 1, Mufudza was the standout bowler with figures of three for 40, while Matigimu supported well with two for 37.
But in the end, Takashinga 2 handled the pressure moments better to claim bragging rights in an entertaining derby.
