TAKASHINGA Queens will take plenty of positives from a hard-fought five-wicket defeat to Ghetto Stars Women in their latest Women's NPL fixture at Mutare Sports Club on Sunday, with the bowling unit in particular giving the club reason for optimism heading into the rest of the season. Chasing a modest 93 for victory, Ghetto Stars were made to work hard for every run, eventually reaching the target on 93/5 later on, a scoreline that reflects the pressure Takashinga's bowlers applied throughout the innings. Vimbai Mutungwindu once again showed her value at the top of the order, top-scoring with a composed 25 off 36 balls, including three well-struck fours, as she anchored the innings before departing at 59/3. Captain Lorraine Pemhiwa also contributed a useful 19 off 21 to give the innings some structure. Takashinga were eventually bowled out for 92 in 20.4 overs, but not without contributions further down the order from Precious Marange, unbeaten on eight, alongside Betty Mangachena and Charmaine Munyukwi. The real story of the match, however, was Takashinga's response with the ball. Mitchel Mavunga was outstanding, returning figures of three for 31 runs in six overs and consistently troubling the Ghetto Stars top order, accounting for Chipo Mugeri Tiripano, Nyasha Gwanzura, and Pellagia Mujaji. Captain Pemhiwa led by example with the ball too, picking up two for four in three tidy overs to remove Passionate Munorwei and Precious Dzvifu, keeping Takashinga in the contest deep into the run chase. It ultimately took an unbeaten stand between Audrey Mazvishaya (7 not out) and Tawana Matandauryi (4 not out) to see Ghetto Stars home in the 21st over, underlining just how competitive Takashinga made the contest despite the modest total on the board. While the result was not the one Takashinga wanted, the improved returns from Mavunga, Pemhiwa, and the fielding effort behind them point to a squad that is fighting for every game and building the kind of resilience that will serve the Queens well as the Women's NPL season progresses. Attention now turns to translating that bowling form into a stronger showing with the bat in the matches ahead.
