TAKASHINGA Patriot 2 produced a spirited all-round performance against Mbizo Cricket Club, despite the match ultimately finishing in Mbizo’s favour following a 37-run defeat at Goldridge Kwekwe on Sunday. There was plenty for Takashinga 2 to build on from both their bowling and batting efforts across the day. Winning the toss and opting to field, Takashinga 2’s decision looked shrewd inside the opening overs. Usher Garwe struck twice inside the first three overs, removing Walter Matawu and Munyaradzi Chingoruma to leave Mbizo reeling early. Daichi Nyandoro was the standout bowler, returning superb figures of three for 17 at an economy of just 2.12, the pick of all bowlers on show in the match. His control through the middle overs repeatedly checked Mbizo’s momentum and was central to keeping the target within reach. Marshall Takodza chipped in with two wickets, including a sharp caught and bowl to remove Sheldon Mugari, while smart work in the field produced two run outs to keep the pressure on. Mbizo were made to work hard for every run, eventually posting 198 all out, a total built largely on a fighting 57 from Clive Madziyo and useful contributions down the order, none of which came easily against a disciplined Takashinga 2 attack. Chasing 199, Takashinga 2’s innings was anchored by a fine knock from Marshall Takodza, who top scored with 72 off 74 balls, striking 10 boundaries in an innings that briefly threatened to take the game away from Mbizo. His strike rate of 97.30 showed real intent, and for long periods he looked capable of chasing the total down almost single handedly. He found good support from Leeroy Chiwaula, who played a composed 29 off 34 balls with three fours, and Tanatswa Chisvo, who added a brisk 19 off 27. Together the trio ensured Takashinga 2 pushed Mbizo all the way, crossing three figures at over 23 overs and continuing to add runs through the middle overs of the innings. Although wickets fell at intervals, three of them run outs, a sign of the pressure both sides were applying in the field, Takashinga 2 never stopped competing, eventually being bowled out for 161 in 36.1 overs. Sahil Patel’s 3/28 for Mbizo was the difference in the closing stages, but Takashinga 2’s total still represented a strong response given the position they found themselves in. Daichi Nyandoro’s 3/17 and Usher Garwe’s 2/34 gave the side a genuine new ball threat, restricting Mbizo to a below par total on a used pitch. Marshall Takodza’s all round game, a wicket taking spell with the ball followed by a fluent 72 with the bat, was the standout individual performance of the match for either side. Contributions from Leeroy Chiwaula and Tanatswa Chisvo in the middle order showed depth in the batting line up that Takashinga 2 can lean on going forward, and the fielding unit created three run outs across the two innings, reflecting sharp, proactive cricket in the field. While the result didn’t go Takashinga 2’s way on this occasion, the performance had plenty of promising signs, a wicket taking new ball pair, a match winning talent in Marshall Takodza, and a middle order capable of building partnerships under pressure.
